Heated & Covered Canal Cruises in Amsterdam (Rain & Winter Guide)

Amsterdam's weather can be unpredictable year-round, with sudden rain showers in summer and chilly temperatures from autumn through spring. Fortunately, Amsterdam canal cruise operators are fully prepared for bad weather. Whether you need a glass-roofed saloon boat with central heating and restrooms or a small open sloop equipped with heated cushions and fleece blankets, here is your complete guide to staying warm and dry on the canals.

What Happens If It Rains During a Canal Cruise?

If it rains, your cruise will not be cancelled. Amsterdam boat operators use all-weather boat designs:

- Enclosed Saloon & Glass Roof Boats: Feature panoramic glass windows, central heating, and full rain protection. You enjoy complete warmth and dry conditions regardless of downpours. - Semi-Open & Convertible Sloops: Feature retractable canvas roofs and side windows that can be closed in less than 30 seconds when rain starts. - Open Sloops: Provided with warm fleece blankets, umbrellas, and heated seat cushions.

Do Canal Boats Have Toilets / Restrooms On Board?

Not all canal boats have restrooms. As a general rule:

- Large covered commercial cruise boats (Blue Boat Company, Stromma, Lovers) almost always have an onboard toilet. - Historic saloon boats and classic luxury private boats feature fully equipped restrooms. - Small open sloops (6–12 passengers) typically do NOT have a toilet on board due to size constraints. However, skippers on private charters can make pitstops at waterfront cafes upon request.

Heated Cushions vs Central Heating

For cold winter days and Light Festival cruises, heating types matter:

- Electric Heated Seats / Cushions: Keep your lower body warm on boutique open sloops while you enjoy clear 360-degree photography views. - Central Air Heating: Keeps enclosed saloon boats at a comfortable 20°C (68°F), perfect for dinner cruises and family trips with young children.
