Sinterklaas's Boat Arrival in Amsterdam 2026: Where to Watch & What to Know
Once a year, Amsterdam's waterways carry more than tour boats. On a Sunday in mid-November, a steamboat glides up the Amstel with Sinterklaas on board, kicking off the Netherlands' biggest family tradition of the season. Thousands of children and parents line the banks, bridges, and quays to catch the first glimpse of the boat as it approaches the city center. If you're planning to be in Amsterdam for the 2026 Sinterklaas Intocht (National Arrival Parade), here's what's confirmed so far, where to stand, and how to make the most of a day that's genuinely built around the water.
What is Sinterklaas's arrival, exactly?
Sinterklaas is the Dutch precursor to Santa Claus, and unlike his chimney-hopping counterpart, he arrives each year by boat from Spain, accompanied by his helpers (Pieten). The national arrival — the Intocht — rotates host cities most years, but Amsterdam has hosted it many times and remains one of the largest and most closely watched versions of the event. The steamboat sails a stretch of the Amstel before Sinterklaas disembarks and continues on horseback through the city center in a parade, greeted by brass bands, decorated floats, and crowds several rows deep along the route. It's broadcast live on Dutch national television and draws families from across the country, not just Amsterdam residents.
