Private vs Shared Canal Cruises in Amsterdam: Which Should You Choose?
Every canal cruise in Amsterdam falls into one of two categories: shared, where you join other travelers on a scheduled departure, or private, where the boat is booked exclusively for your group. Both put you on the same 17th-century canal ring, but the experience, the price, and who else is on board couldn't be more different. To make this decision easier, we pulled the numbers straight from BoatLocal's live catalogue of 70 cruises across 15 Amsterdam operators — 43 shared departures and 27 private charters — to show you exactly what each option actually costs and who it's built for.
What's the Real Difference?
A shared cruise sells individual tickets on a fixed schedule — you show up at the departure time and board alongside other guests, sometimes solo travelers, sometimes other small groups. A private cruise reserves the entire boat for your party only, at whatever time you arrange with the operator. That single distinction cascades into everything else: price per person, flexibility, noise level, and how much control you have over the route and pace.
The Real Numbers
Across the 38 shared cruises in the catalogue with listed pricing, tickets start as low as €14.90 and top out at €119, averaging €36.91 per person. Private charters run from €247.50 to €675 for the whole boat, averaging €350.75 — but that's a flat rate for the entire vessel, not per person, so a private boat splits cheaply once you have six or eight people aboard. Group size tells the rest of the story: shared boats with a listed capacity carry between 6 and 26 passengers, averaging just under 20 per departure. Private boats range from intimate 6-guest launches up to 35-person vessels for large charters, but average a much tighter 13 to 14 guests — because most private bookings are couples, families, or small celebration groups who specifically want the boat to themselves.
Ratings don't help you choose between the two — both categories are excellent, with shared cruises averaging 4.99 out of 5 and private cruises averaging 5.00 out of 5 across thousands of reviews. The decision really comes down to budget, privacy, and flexibility rather than quality.
