King's Night (Koningsnacht) Boat Party in Amsterdam
Koningsnacht, the evening of April 26th before King's Day itself, is when Amsterdam's party actually starts. While April 27th is famous for the orange-clad daytime crowds and the floating market on the canals, King's Night is a different animal entirely: bars, clubs and open-air stages across the city centre fill up from early evening, and the canals turn into a slower, more atmospheric version of the chaos to come. If you're planning a group night out on the water before the main event, a Koningsnacht boat cruise is one of the best ways to experience the city's biggest party weekend without fighting for space on a packed towpath.
How King's Night differs from King's Day
King's Day (Koningsdag) on April 27th is a daytime street and canal festival — think free markets, orange face paint, families, and thousands of small boats packed onto the Prinsengracht and Herengracht from mid-morning onward. Koningsnacht, by contrast, is an evening and nightlife event. The canal-side crowds are thinner earlier on but build steadily after sunset as bars and club nights across the Jordaan, Rembrandtplein and Leidseplein areas open their doors. On the water, this means a Koningsnacht cruise feels less like navigating a floating traffic jam and more like a proper evening out — live music drifting from bridges, terraces lit up, and a build-up of energy that peaks well after dark. Many visitors deliberately book their canal cruise for the night before rather than the day itself, simply because there's more room to actually move and enjoy the ride.
