King's Day Amsterdam β€” Watching from the Water

King's Day (Koningsdag) on 27 April is Amsterdam's biggest annual celebration, and the canals are the epicentre. The entire canal ring fills with orange-clad Amsterdammers on houseboats, in rowing boats, on paddleboats, and on every kind of floating vessel imaginable. Watching β€” or joining β€” the canal celebrations from a boat is the most immersive way to experience Koningsdag. Here is how to do it.

What Happens on Amsterdam's Canals on King's Day

By 10:00 on King's Day, Amsterdam's canals are already packed. Houseboats are transformed into floating stages and bars. Rowing boats, kayaks, and rented sloops fill every stretch of the Prinsengracht and Keizersgracht. The Jordaan neighbourhood canals are particularly festive β€” locals set up sound systems on their boats and the whole area becomes an outdoor water party.

The canal traffic is chaotic but joyful β€” rules are relaxed, everyone is in orange, and the atmosphere is unlike any other day in Amsterdam. A private or small-group boat gives you a front-row floating seat to all of it.

Booking a Boat for King's Day

King's Day is the single most booked day in Amsterdam's canal tour calendar. Private boats sell out months in advance β€” many operators have waiting lists from December onwards for the following April. If you are planning to visit Amsterdam for King's Day and want a boat, book as early as possible β€” ideally January or February.

Note that some regular tour operators suspend their standard routes on King's Day due to canal congestion, and offer King's Day-specific celebration cruises instead. These are typically 2–3 hours and designed to be part of the festivities rather than a sightseeing tour.

What to Wear and Bring

Orange is the colour of the day β€” virtually everyone in Amsterdam wears orange on Koningsdag. A hat, orange accessories, and comfortable clothes are the basics. April in Amsterdam can still be cold and rainy β€” bring a waterproof layer even if the forecast looks good.

Most King's Day boats include drinks or allow BYO. The atmosphere is celebratory and relaxed. Bring snacks, comfortable shoes (you may step on and off the boat at stops), and a camera β€” the canal scenes on King's Day are extraordinary.
