Bringing your own drinks and food on an Amsterdam canal cruise is one of the most popular ways to enjoy the canals without paying high bar markups. While large commercial tour operators require guests to buy drinks on board, many small boutique operators and private charters actively encourage guests to BYOB (Bring Your Own Beverage). Which Amsterdam Boats Allow BYOB?
As a rule of thumb: shared commercial cruises with 30–60 passengers do NOT allow BYOB (they run their own onboard bar). Small private charters and boutique open sloops (capacity 6–12 passengers) frequently permit BYOB.
On BoatLocal, many private boat rentals specify "BYOB Friendly" in their feature list. When you rent a private boat, you are paying for the boat and skipper — bringing your own cooler of drinks, wine, prosecco, or local craft beer is completely welcome.
What Can You Bring On Board?
You can bring beer, wine, prosecco, soft drinks, and ice. Glass bottles are allowed on private boats, but cans and plastic bottles are preferred for safety on open sloops.
Food is also welcome on BYOB private charters: artisan cheeses from local shops, baguettes, tapas, and snacks are common choices. Most operators provide a small table, cutting board, and bottle openers on request.

While drinking responsibly on private boats is completely legal and common practice in Amsterdam, captains enforce basic safety rules:
